Great News for Cancer Fighters: New Budget Brings Major Relief

Hello, I’m Dr. Ekta Vala Chandarana, and today I have some important news to share with you all. In the recently presented Union Budget 2024-2025, our Finance Minister Mrs. Nirmala Sitharaman announced significant changes that will benefit cancer patients across the country.

Customs Duty Exemptions on Cancer Treatment Drugs

The government has proposed to fully exempt three vital cancer treatment drugs—Trastuzumab Deruxtecan, Osimertinib, and Durvalumab—from customs duties, reducing them from 10 percent to nil.

This step is a major boost for patients and their families, making these essential medications more affordable. Mrs. Sitharaman emphasized that this initiative is aimed at supporting and enhancing domestic manufacturing, promoting export competitiveness, and simplifying taxation, all while prioritizing the interests of the general public and consumers.

Enhanced Healthcare Infrastructure

In addition to the exemptions on cancer drugs, Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced modifications to the basic customs duty on x-ray tubes and flat panel detectors used in medical x-ray machines. This change, part of the phased manufacturing programme, aims to align duties with domestic production capabilities, further strengthening the country’s healthcare infrastructure.

A Comprehensive Strategy for Better Healthcare

These measures are part of the government’s broader strategy to improve healthcare affordability and accessibility. By promoting local manufacturing and fostering innovation, the government aims to create a more self-reliant healthcare sector that can better meet the needs of its population.

The healthcare industry has welcomed these robust measures. Dr. Harsh Mahajan, founder and chairman of Mahajan Imaging & Labs and Chairman of the FICCI Health Services Committee, described the budget as one for continuity and inclusive growth. Industry stakeholders believe these reforms represent significant progress towards sustainable development and innovation in healthcare, highlighting the government’s commitment to building a strong and competitive industry.

Looking Forward

These changes signal a brighter future for cancer patients, promising more accessible and affordable treatment options. As we continue to strive for better healthcare solutions, these reforms bring hope and relief to those battling cancer.

Stay strong, and let’s continue to fight cancer together with renewed hope and optimism.
